SUSTAINABILITY AT SALEWA: GRASS BOX FOR SHIPPING

#SUSTAINABILITY

Salewa is committed to sustainability and has a history of introducing well thought-out CSR and ecological projects. Environmental protection is an integral part of the overall sustainability strategy of its parent company, the Oberalp Group. Now, Salewa is making a new, major leap forward. From July 2019, the company will be initially started shipping 60 per cent of products purchased via its e-commerce site in a new, personalised grass-paper box – and reducing its environmental footprint.

Salewa "Grassbox" – sustainable packaging innovation
The new ColomPac® boxes use FSC-certified cardboard from sustainably managed forests in Europe in the outer layer, and have a special paper inner layer made of 40 per cent grass from regional sources. The grass has three “pluses” in regards to sustainability: first, it is harvested from compensation areas to ensure that animal feed supplies are not affected; second, water consumption is reduced by 50% compared to corrugated paper; and third, CO2 emissions in the production are reduced by up to 50%. The eco-friendly packaging is then manufactured by Dinkhauser Kartonagen GmbH in Tirol in their climate-neutral factory, so climate-damaging greenhouse gases are avoided, and the new packaging has a zero-carbon footprint. Furthermore, the short supply path of just 90 kilometers to the Salewa headquarters and carbon neutral production further underpin the sustainable packaging concept and its significantly reduced environmental impact.

The manufacturing technique produces a genuine natural material that is pleasant to touch and is 100% recyclable. Salewa prints the boxes to ensure appropriate presentation of their high-quality products and to inform consumers of the advantages for people and the environment.

In case customers wish to return the goods, the "Grassbox" comes with a self-sealing returns seal to enable them to reuse the box and avoid sending items back in additional packaging.

“We have to think long term. As a mountain sports company, we want to introduce every possible measure to support social responsibility and reduce our environmental footprint,” emphasizes Stefan Rainer, General Manager Salewa. “We are confident about the "Grassbox" and are proud to be able to send Salewa products to our customers in natural, sustainable packaging.”

The Salewa "Grassbox" is just one example of a number of projects that the Oberalp Group is introducing with its brands Salewa, Dynafit, Pomoca and Wild Country. The South Tirolean family-owned group’s sustainability strategy is far-reaching, ambitious and passionate. For transparency and to provide detailed and up-to-date information, Oberalp makes its Sustainability Report 2018 available to download at the Social Responsibility section of the website.
