Jean-Baptiste Chandelier: Why I Fly

A visual and sensory quest to capture the pure essence of flight and convey the urgency of honoring what truly drives us.

As a child, I dreamed of taking off from the schoolyard to weave between the bell towers of the old town. These childhood dreams took on an unexpected dimension when life brutally confronted me with its fragility – losing my father at 10, my mother at 18. At an age when others believe themselves immortal, I felt like “the next in line,” a revelation usually reserved for life’s final stages.

This early awareness that our time is limited pushed me, very young, toward what truly animated me: flying. Paradoxically, this tragedy became my blessing – the chance not to postpone what burns within me.

“Why I fly” is an attempt to capture in images this pure sensation of flight, to visually share what cannot be described in words. But beyond the beauty of paragliding and the freedom it provides, this video carries a deeper message: to listen to that inner spark, that visceral urge that drives us.

Whether it’s about flying or pursuing any other dream, the invitation is the same: don’t procrastinate your life, don’t postpone your desires to tomorrow or to some hypothetical next existence.

Because life is now. And it’s beautiful.

Salewa People embody Salewa’s vision of the mountains: people who experience the vertical environment with authenticity, courage, and a deep sense of connection. JB is one of them. His story, marked by an intense and transformative personal journey, led him to discover in Hike & Fly not just a sport, but a way to express freedom and listen to himself. It is this inner quest, intertwined with technical skill and life in the mountains, that defines his way of being in the world — and it is what makes him a significant face in our athlete community.
