SALEWA IRONFLY 2018 - A RACE WITHIN A RACE

#SALEWAEVENTS #NEWS

Hiking and flying. Imagine amalgamating these two activities. Imagine getting to the top of the mountain and then simply letting the wind sweep you away. Imagine diving into nature with all of your senses... how far do you think you could go? To what extent could you rely solely on your own strength and the goodwill of nature and the wind?

Salewa Ironfly was inspired by the essence of mankind and nature, the perception of space, continuous training, and the contrast of two worlds coming together for the new and challenging Hike & Fly race. The Ironfly competition invites participating athletes to walk and fly through the Central Alps in less than seven days.

From the 12th until the 19th May 2018, the first edition of the Salewa Ironfly race will take place, starting in Lecco. The route, which is approximately 450 km long, takes athletes to the Monte Rosa massif in the west, over the Lombardy foothills at the base of the European Alps, to Piedmont and the Canton of Ticino and finally to Bormio in the east.
Participants will ride 4 air currents before they reach Suello, near Lecco, where the competition ends in an exciting race against time, the other competitors and nature.

You can accompany the athletes during the competition with live tracking, which is supported by Club Scurbatt and Dolomiti Super Fly – and by the growing enthusiasm of the pilots for the Hike & Fly competitions.

Salewa athletes Christian Maurer, paraglider and hang glider pilot, and Aaron Durogati, professional paraglider and athlete in various disciplines will be taking part in the race. Aaron has won the Paragliding World Cup twice and has been the winner of both the Red Bull Dolomitenmann and the Red Bull Elements. He also spearheaded the opening of new steep pastes and speedriding routes in the Alps and Georgia.
