SIMON OBERRAUNER

NATIONALITY: AUSTRAIN
DATE OF BIRTH: 12.05.1991
ACTIVITY: PARAGLIDING, HIKE&FLY

BIO

You look up, into the deep blue sky of Graz. There are two hawks, flying in a circle they ride the core of a thermal and climb, becoming smaller and smaller. If this is one of your earliest childhood memories, it's hard not to be bewitched by the magic of the air. Simon Oberrauner approaches the flight in this way, as an observer: first of birds of prey, then of human pilots, met by chance during a journey of 140 kilometers through Styria, undertaken to visit his grandparents. Shortly afterwards he obtained his pilot's license, and since then he has continued to systematically devote himself to hike and fly.
"What pushes me forward? The search for efficiency in movement, in harmony with nature and my body, without motors, only with my paraglider and the power of the sun".

Activities practiced:
Simon loves to shuffle cards, but one of the cards must be paragliding: thanks to innovative and lightweight materials, today you can mix it with ski touring, mountaineering, cycling, trail running and more. The only limit is imagination.
Hobbies:
In his free time Simon loves to dedicate himself to photography, to video, and to share his passion for flying with relatives, friends and acquaintances. Like when he took his seventy-nine year old grandmother to fly in tandem, for example.
Favorite place:
The summit of Mount Nazogl, in Styria. It's the mountain behind his grandparents' house, a place full of treasured memories, perfect for looking to the whole valley, and for paragliding, of course.
Favorite book:
Der Fremde in uns (The stranger within us), by Arno Gruen: a logical and well written book that criticizes the way in which our societies are less and less empathetic, more and more closed.
Biggest fear:
Overestimate your skills and get into a dead end situation: in the best case you end up with your sail stuck on a tree, and your legs hanging in the air.
