Founded in 1881 by four mountain guides from the village of Primiero – Michele Bettega, Bortolo Zagonel, Antonio Tavernaro and Giuseppe Zecchini – the Scuola di Alpinismo Aquile di San Martino has some 18 professional mountain guides. The guides are known as the “aquile” (eagle) and offer a wide range of mountain activities all over the Dolomites. Based in San Martino di Castrozza, a mountain resort in the in the Primiero valley, and surrounded by the peaks of the Pala group, including Vezzana and the Cimon della Pala, they have insider knowledge and extensive experience of the Dolomiti. In summer, they offer adventures for all skill and experience levels, from trekking to alpine climbing, while in winter, they guide ski touring, freeriding and ice climbing tours in the breathtaking mountains around San Martino and Passo Rolle. The Aquile have a reputation for being storytellers and guardians of the secrets of the mountains and have a deep knowledge of its people, habits and traditions.
