Kurt Albert dies after tragic accident

With deep sadness we hereby inform you of the death of Kurt Albert on the evening of 28 September 2010, as a result of injuries sustained two days before in a fall on the “Höhenglücksteig“ via ferrata trail in northern Bavaria. Kurt had been climbing with a group when, for reasons unknown, he fell a distance of eighteen metres.

Kurt Albert was renowned as the father of “Rotpunkt“ or red point climbing. He was one of the world’s leading proponents of free climbing. His climbing experiences fill a long and excellent chapter in recent climbing history, during which time he applied his red point philosophy to very high and difficult mountains.

Kurt Albert was a visionary who gave direction to many people beyond the world of climbing. For over twenty years he was part of the SALEWA team. With Kurt’s passing, we are losing a great personality and above all a dear friend and companion who was very close to our hearts. We extend our sincere sympathies to his family.

“What we loved most of all about Kurt was his wonderful personality and his determination to go his own way and to listen to his inner voice in every situation. Kurt taught us the correct measure of all things and impressed us deeply with his modesty, his way of facing immense challenges and his ability to forge great friendships. His strength was to remain true to himself and never to deviate – right to the last step.
